  Case: Temper, Temper
I have a student that is known for being intelligent. When he gets an answer wrong, he throws a fit. How do I let him know that he is not perfect and he can't become angry each time he is incorrect?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I had this same problem with a student this year. He would literally pitch a fit and fall on the floor screaming. Unfortunately, his dad has similar behavior at age 40. We discussed how everyone is good at something, but that we can't be the best at everything. We discussed all of the things he's really good at and then I asked him to tell me things he is not the best at. It was a starting point, but the tantrums lasted several months. In kindergarten (what I teach) it also has a lot to do with their lack of maturity.

Comments: I think if his dad exhibits the behavior at age 40, it is more an issue of his upbringing than his maturity.

Comments: This seems like a great idea, asking the student what he is good and bad at realizing everyone isn't good at everything. Great Idea!

Comments: While what you said it true, I don't think it really gives a solution, but rather excuses the issue as one of maturity.

Comments: I feel this is not taking the issue far enough, the students tantrums could be something that effected his next few years of schooling.

Comments: I understand that students in Kindergarten are not the most mature kinds of students, but you cannot allow the behavior to persist, blaming it on their maturity level. Instead, teach them productive ways of channeling their temper.

Comments: Even in Kindergarten, the students need to have the expectations of what is acceptable and what isn't.

Comments: I agree in some ways how discussing the child's good qualities and strengths but I think a lot of his behavior most likely has to do with his dad. Children tend to be quite receptive and if his dad is the main person he's around all the time he's going to most likely adopt that behavior.
