  Case: Basketball Team- Similar Case
I coached a high school womens basketball team. Several players on the team were openly lesbians. Throughout the course of four years, more and more players "came out." I heard several rumors that one player, Chelsea, was approaching another player, Sarah, and wanting to "date" her. Sarah was not a lesbian and politely handled the matter by simply saying no. After several no's, Chelsea began punishing Sarah on the basketball court. She would not pass Sarah the ball, set picks for Sarah, and continously complain that Sarah wasn't doing her job. Since Chelsea was the leader of the team and of the lesbian group, the other lesbian players treated Sarah the same. It's not fair to Sarah to allow the other players to treat her this way, but I can't call attention to the lesbians without them thinking I'm discriminating. How do I handle this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have meeting first with Chelsea and ask her what the problem was and remind her she is the team learder and if she can't lead what do she suggest I do. Then I would have a meeting with the whole team and remind them that they are a team an they are their to help each other and any other issue needs to be left off the courts.

Comments: This is a useful solution. I think having an individual meeting with Chelsea first would definitely help things get worked out better than having an abrupt team meeting. However, this is something that has been mentioned a lot.

Comments: If you already know why she is treating her wrong you need to talk to her and the team who are following her actions and deal with the problem before it gets anymore out of hand.

Comments: I would not use this solution as Chelsea does not need to be pulled aside by herself. It appears there are several teammates doing the same thing. A team meeting should be called and the situation addressed as a whole. They all need to be reminded that a player should not be singled out and punished by other team members no matter what the circumstance is.

Comments: The solution provides a way to address the issue without bringing up the sexuality of the girls on the basketball team and reinforce team ethics.

Comments: Just leaving the issues off the court will not solve the problem. It will tell the girls they can treat Sarah however they want outside of practice and games.

Comments: I don't believe talking to the team leader alone first would solve anything. it just gives her a way to plead her own innocence with no one else around to defend themselves when she is obviously the one making the bad calls. this would best be handled as a team discussion.

Comments: I think this is too confrontational - a group problem should be handled in a group, in a cooperative manner.
