Case: Listening to the Intern
There is a student that is genuinely good when there in an intern in the room. They constantly run to the intern and when ever the intern asks the student to do something they do it immediately. Whenever I ask the student I have to ask several times. The student also acts out whenever it is just myself and constantly interrupts me during lessons. Is there anything I can do to possibly get the student to listen to myself? The intern is only with me two days out of the week and will occasionally come in to fulfill some volunteer hours.

It is important to remember that it is your classroom even with an intern two days a week. Interns are a new face and a new style of teaching which students can get excited about however, students need to be respectful of both teachers. I would suggest having a co-teaching unit with your intern to see if the student responds to you while they are there. Also observe and talk to the intern, it could be a simple thing like they are giving this one student the longed for attention. |

| Comments: This is a fantastic idea! Watching the intern during a co-teaching unit or even observing the behavior while in your classroom could help you discover possible reasons behind why the child responds better to them. Another thing that I would purpose is whether the intern is the same gender as yourself? Some students simple respond better to different genders. |

| Comments: I feel that this is the best solution for this case. This is a collaborative effort to solve a problem that is occurring in the classroom with the student. The student has found a connection with the intern, however, still needs to listen and respect the teacher. |

| Comments: I agree it is important to explain the situation to the intern and have them help with the situation as much as possible. Having the intern teach a lesson to the whole class or having them talk to student about their behavior when the intern is not there might help in why the student acts up. I think it is also important as the teacher like you stated is to make sure you are taking an interest in the student's work and have them participate more. |

| Comments: Trying to co-teach and seeing if the student pays attention to both of you is a great idea. It allows not just you, but the intern as well, to see how the student reacts to the both of you. If they still pay more attention to the intern ask the intern why that might be, because even though you may work with the students constantly, being there only a few days a week may help the intern to see things you may accidentally miss, such as the student's need for attention. |

| Comments: Yes, a lot of students tend to like the intern because they are different. It might not even be something you are or are not doing. The student might just feel more of a connection with the intern. |

| Comments: I had to deal with something similar when I was an intern. I recommended giving the student more attention when I wasn't there and sure enough he was an angel the rest of the year. |
