Case: Take Your Time Young Man
I have a student that completes reading assessments or assignments in about 10 to 15 minutes. It is obvious that the student is not giving his best effort due to the time invested in the assignment and the grade received. I have looked at his Lexile level and the assignments are not too hard. How do I get this student to take more time with completing reading assignments or assessments?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think in order to get this student to take his time you can use a reward system. Depending on the assignment and the average time it would take to do it than you can have the student do his work slower. Say you have a reading assignment for the student. Have a set of questions ready for the first chapter. Say it usually takes an hour to read the chapter. If he takes his time to read through the chapter he has to come up to you and answer three specific questions that he could only know if he truly read the book. He cannot have the book when you give him the questions and you observe him to make sure he does not cheat. If he gets the questions right he gets a reward. You decide on the reward obviously.
