Case: Communicating With Uninvolved Parents
How do you deal with parents who don't respond to email, phone calls, letters, notes, conferences about their studnets?

When communicating with uninvolved parents/guardians I would make sure to contact them regarding something positive their child has done in school. Parents sometimes assume that teachers are calling regarding something negative so the teacher needs to make sure this is communicated in the voice mail, email, etc. Also, find out which method of communication and what time is best is best for the parent. The teacher may have to make a phone call on the weekend. |

Comments: I would definitely try to get ahold of them regarding something good. Depending on the type of child it is, the parent may feel like they are in trouble, again, so they're afraid to find out. Being able to get that across in whatever form of communication you are trying is very important because it lets the parent know that their child isn't always bad, also if a parent works a lot they may not have much time, so if you can find even 5 minutes of availability to talk with them you can still get your point across quickly, and they can know that they can call you back if they feel like they need to. |

Comments: Positive communication is important. In my current internship we are required to make six positive phone calls home. Parents get tired of hearing negative everything and may be avoiding contact for this reason. |

Comments: This is what I would do if I was in your situation. Some parents are working 2-3 jobs, so finding out when the best time is to communicate will be helpful and having something positive to say is always nice too! |
