Case: Administrator Playing Favorites
An assistant principal has a group of students that she plays favorites with. These students are constantly in her office when they should be in class and when any of them are written up they receive barely a slap on the wrist if anything. This same principal sends out emails to the school telling teachers to not send students to her office without her permission, but when students wander in after getting permission to go to the bathroom she lets them stay. How do you handle this?

If one of my students was going to the assistant principal's office when they asked me to use the restroom I would create new classroom procedures regarding the restroom. Rules: One person at a time, Return to class as soon as you are done. Do not wander around campus when you ask to use the restroom. Then I would explain the consequences if they do not follow the rules: first: verbal warning, second: note home to parent, third: phone call home to parents. If this does not stop my student(s) from going to the assistant principal's office then I would ask to schedule a meeting with the assistant principal. I would tell the assistant principal that I are implementing new classroom rules about the restroom and students are not to wander campus, including coming to his or her office. Please do not allow students to come to your office and send them immediately back to class so they do not miss instruction. I would thank the assistant principal for his or help with the situation. |
