  Case: Cheating Student
I have this student whom I have caught cheating twice now. When I called her mother to discuss it she told me that her child never lied to her and told her that she did not cheat. The mother then preceded to ask me if I could be wrong about her daughter cheating. I explained the first time that I caught her motioning for answers from the student who sits behind her and that she even turned and asked for answers. During the second cheating incident, the student had a piece of paper with answers written on it between her legs. She had the piece of paper balled up in her hand when she turned in her quiz. I explained each situation to the parent and she continued to say I was wrong that her child would never cheat. The student has not tried to cheat again, but my fear/worry is if I catch her again that I am not sure how to approach it with the mother. The mother it seems will not believe me no matter what I say or even show her. So, what would be the best way to handle this situation if it arises?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
You could have a class discussion about cheating to address the issue. During the discussion put in place consequences similar to a behavior chart if a student is caught cheating.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) No
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: I think that this solution could be improved upon because I do not think that just having a classroom chat will change that way that the student cheats or maybe it will sway their decision for a few assignments and then the student is right back to it. I would make sure it has a more long term affect on the student.

Comments: If you do have a discussion about cheating, make sure the student doesn't feel like they are being called out.

Comments: This is not what I would do because it is an isolated issue and I don't think it would be likely to solve the problem.
