Case: Baseball Parent
I have a student who is really involved in baseball. He repeatedly does not bring in his homework and tells me he does not have time because he has baseball practice and games every night. When I spoke to his parents, they told me baseball was his passion and his dream and they supported that. They said they would work on the homework issue. It has been three weeks since I had that conversation and nothing has changed. How can I stress to this child's parents that education should be a priority above baseball and how important it is to complete and submit his homework each week in a more effective way.

If it is a school baseball team, I would try to have a conference with the student, student's parents, and baseball coach. Form an agreement of homework hours during this time. Perhaps have a special "HWK CHART" for the student and reward system to motivate him. |

| Comments: If it is the schools baseball team, then like you said talking to the coach is a great idea. I would not give the student any special privileges because that is not fair to him or the other students. I would do my best to make the student understand the importance of school and balance by explaining that he can do both. |

| Comments: I love the idea of the HW chart for the student. If his parents are not concerned with the homework issue, maybe this will be a way to get the child motivated to complete their homework independently. |

| Comments: I think this is an excellent solution because it brings all parties involved. Plus, especially for coaches they want to instill more than athletic skills in their players as they know when they get older academics are considered as well. Overall the idea of getting everyone involved with help keep the student on task and accountable. |
