  Case: Diversity in Honors/AP Classes
It is the end of the year and you are working on course recommendations for the next school year. Your department head has told you that administration wants more diversity in honors and AP classes and that she will be checking recommendations to make sure that you are not only recommending white students. You begin to feel fearful that you will be labeled racist if you do not include more students of other races. However, you don't feel comfortable placing students in classes where they won't be successful for the sake of diversity. What would you do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would tell the administration that I do not feel comfortable placing any students in a class if they were not ready or would not be successful.

Comments: I would definitely express my concerns to the administration and ask for assistance while going through this process. It is important to diversify the AP setting but it is even more important to ensure students are in the setting that will allow them to be successful.

Comments: It doesn't address how to get a more diverse population in these classes. I think students should feel ready but this isn't the problem.

Comments: I do not think that approaching the administration with such remarks is appropriate. It never looks good to be defensive. Simply take your time and assess each student individually and determine whether or not they would be successful in a higher level class. If not, then take your concerns to the administration but do not outright complain to them.

Comments: Going to administration and saying that you do not feel comfortable placing any students in a class if they are not ready is not enough. Before you go to administration, you must have documentation showing why you feel the student is not ready to take an honors/AP class.

Comments: This would not really solve the issue. I agree most with the posting about having data to support the findings. It is important that prejudice be shunned, especially in the academic community.
