  Case: Relationship Advice???
My students say that I am very personable and approachable. They feel as if they can talk to me about anything. One student asked if they could talk to me and I said of course. She began to tell me about this boy that she really liked and began asking me for relationship advice. I didn't feel comfortable talking to her because I thought it would be me getting too personal with a student. Is this wrong to talk to our students about things outside of the school?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would stay away from those types of conversation and strictly keep it professional. I would redirect her to her parents or the school counselor for advice. After all, it is not your child, you are only there to do one thing and one thing only - teach!

Comments: I don't agree with this solution, because we aren't strictly teachers. Our jobs span many aspects, and it's our job to help our students in any way they need us to, within ethical reason of course.

Comments: I think that sometimes the parents aren't available or willing to listen to students so as a teacher you can listen to the student but keep your answers general and school appropriate.

Comments: I would not do this, I think this is too extreme. If the student is reaching out, I think it is ok to respond, just do not get to comfortable because your their teacher, not their friend.

Comments: I do not think redirecting her is a good idea. I believe that sometimes students might think that their teacher is the only one who cares or may fear what their parents might say. I believe listening is a great way to make sure students are saying safe, even if you do not give any advice. The teacher can always talk to a counselor if they fee that the student is in need or trouble.

Comments: This solution is terrible. Teachers should be available for their students and should care about their lives. I would not use this advice.

Comments: I have not been a teacher or even worked in a school as of yet, but I don't think that a teacher's only job is to teach. Sometimes you might be the only person the student feels comfortable talking to. You should not take on anything you cannot handle, but I think we need to be open to listening to students.

Comments: I agree that the main job of a teacher is to educate her students but it's also to express empathy and compassion for the students. If a student came to me with a problem I could never just ignore them and be that cold unless it was something completely inappropriate then it would be a completely different story.

Comments: I don't fully believe in this because teachers can still be nice to their students while being professional.
