  Case: Sexist Parent
I have a male student that works very well with the other boys in the classroom but when it comes to working with the girls he says a lot of sexist comments such as, "Why do you even try when you're just going to end up in the kitchen." I asked for a conference with the parents and found out that the father has been teaching him very sexist things. He continuously disrespected me and told me that what his son was saying is the truth in the end. His mother was not there and so I felt very uncomfortable and very mad that his father was treating me this way. I have tried contacting the mother to try and get her to come in but she constantly cancels on me and does not respond to any of my emails or notes. What should I do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would immediately go to the guidance counselor. This is completely inappropriate and unacceptable.

Comments: I do not think the guidance counselor would be that helpful. I think the principal should get involved.

Comments: This is fine for the issue with a parent being disrespectful to the teacher, but it will not help the child's behavior improve, which is the main concern.

Comments: I think this is a good idea. I saw other comments saying how setting up a meeting with both parents would be a good idea but chances are that will never happen. If the mother hasn't come yet and she doesn't reply to emails, she isn't planning on coming. Although it seems harsh to some, I think the student needs to speak to the principal. It is unfortunate that the child grows up in a home with such negativity, but that can not be brought into school and that is not acceptable.

Comments: This will not solve the problem. The way they want to raise their son at home is their choice.

Comments: Though I believe a guidance counselor can help I do not believe that the teacher should seize interaction with the parents. Maybe call the guidance councilor in on the next parent teacher conference.

Comments: I think that this would not solve the problem in the end. The student must learn that what he is doing is not right and not true. Getting the guidance counselor involved will not correct that mindset.

Comments: Well I think that the guidance counselor should have it placed in this situation and can help with the issue, I don't believe that they should be the only way that you approach the issue

Comments: A little more work needs to be done in order for this solution to be solved. Just going to a guidance counselor will not help the student change his ways, as he's learning sexism from home.
