Case: Spanish in the Classroom
I have 14 ESOL kids in my classroom. Most of them still speak Spanish at home. I have noticed that they also speak in Spanish at school w hen they are interacting with one another. Does this isolate my English speakers? Each of these students in capable of speaking English and do so during instruction. Is it ok to allow them to continue to speak in Spanish?

Yes, definitely let them continue to speak Spanish in the classroom. As a way to include English speakers, you could have the Spanish speakers teach them some Spanish words and phrases so they can be included too. |

| Comments: I see both benefits and drawbacks of this. While it is important for the continued use of Spanish in the classroom by these 14 students because they don't want to lose their cultural identities, it is also important that they interact with the other kids. I think that as long as everyone is participating and interacting with each other, there is no harm. |

| Comments: The Spanish speakers at my elementary school do this all the time! It's a fun way to introduce the class to a different culture and makes the monolingual students feel included. I'm not sure a few key phrases would be enough the solve the issue of exclusion the poster is talking about though. |

| Comments: I do not like the idea of having to teach spanish to the english speakers. If they choose to do that among themselves, then that is great! But that is not how you should choose to handle things in your classroom. |

| Comments: I wouldn't do this because they are supposed to be learning English. If they keep speaking Spanish they will never improve. And it's unfair for the English speakers. |
