  Case: Tough Interview Question- Retakes
I went on a job interview quite some time ago; however, there is one question that continues to stump me and I'm not quite sure I could have answered it. The principal asked me what my views were on allowing students to retake tests. Would I take the average? What happens if students fail the first one on purpose, only to get a high A on every retake? I wasn't sure how to answer this because the county where I came from only allowed one retake per 9 weeks. How would you answer a question like this? In my experience, retake rules were always decided at the county level.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I personally take the average of the two tests. If a student fails it intentionally to see what is on it, just to retest and to do better, it does not help because the score is averaged together and it is never the same test just the same concepts. I also offer Retests because you always have students who scored a B and they really want to improve and get an A, so if they want to study more and strive to improve, all power to them. I used to only allow students who failed tests the opportunity to Retests but I changed that policy this year due to a college professor allowing me the opportunity to correct my own work. So I thought it was only fair I treat my students the same. Our principal leaves the decision up to the individual teacher to decide whether or not to Retests.

Comments: While I think that this might be good advice, it doesn't quite give a solution to the question of how the interview question would be answered - not literally, but a guideline for anyone in that situation.

Comments: This is the worst solution because you don't want the students to get in the habit of "I can fail and the teacher will give me a second chance." Sometimes there are no second opportunities in life, they should try their best on the first time.
