Case: Spanish in the Classroom
I have 14 ESOL kids in my classroom. Most of them still speak Spanish at home. I have noticed that they also speak in Spanish at school w hen they are interacting with one another. Does this isolate my English speakers? Each of these students in capable of speaking English and do so during instruction. Is it ok to allow them to continue to speak in Spanish?

This is a challenging scenario. It would be great for you to know at what stage of ESOL they are. If this is their first, second, or even third year of learning English as a second language, although they speak English well, they may not be ready to communicate fully in English yet. At this stage of language acquisition, they feel more comfortable talking in their native language. I am a native Spanish speaker and also a World Languages teacher, and familiar with the stages of language acquisition having gone through this myself as a middle school student. I would recommend designating times for your students to interact socially, in a group setting as they learn through cooperative groups where they can interact about what they are learning in your class. At the same time, I would recommend that you establish a procedure with the entire class, that when you have class discussions, or peer work with students that don't speak the ELLs native language, all students use English because it is kind to include all in the conversation. |

| Comments: I agree that although many ELL students speak English well, that doesn't mean that they feel entirely comfortable discussing and socializing in that language when they know they could use their native language. I think you are right to suggest there be some time designated where they are allowed and even encouraged to use their Spanish. I do not believe it should be banned from the classroom at all, allowing it to be used in certain ways show the students that their culture is valued, but also that it can be rude or excluding to always be speaking in Spanish when they have monolingual classmates. |

| Comments: In the classroom, I think that it is important to use English because that will only make their English stronger and will not allow the other students to feel left out. During recess, lunch, and freetime, I would say that is an appropriate time to speak in Spanish amongst eachother. |

| Comments: This solution is helpful for this case. There is a time for speaking their native language which is Spanish and there is a time for them to speak English. Speaking their "target" language is important if they want to be fluent in it, which can take up to more than 10 years! We don't want to force these students to speak strictly English because they may have an anxiety of speaking English loudly and it may also be against their culture to speak strictly English... especially at home. |
