  Case: New Migrant Child
I am a third grade teacher and I love my job! However, Lately, I have been having problems. I have a new Asian student that just came from China. She is coping very well with her change and is making friends, however, I have noticed that she scratches her hair a lot. One of the students told me that they saw her in the bathroom pulling things from her hair, What should I do? I am not sure if I should tell her parents or the faculty.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Sometimes children pull/mess with their hair in response to stress. If it is lice as the previous solutions suggest, talk with the nurse and have the other children in the classroom checked. But if she is pulling out her hair, it could be nervousness or stress from being in this new place. I would have a conversation with the student and make sure you are doing everything possible to make her feel comfortable.

Comments: I really liked that you did not suggest taking her to the nurse by herself. The issue may or may not have been lice as you stated but not matter what the student should not be made to feel like she is the problem. Lice is not something you can help and is very common in elementary schools.

Comments: I think this is a great solution. Stress can trigger many different "unusual" behaviors in children and adults as well so this isn't out of the ordinary. However, if the concern is that the child has lice, contact the school immediately and request students heads to be checked.

Comments: This solution its helpful because it mentions that the cause behind the student scratching her hair might be lice or it might be related to stress. The teacher should find a way to help the student because this is affecting her health

Comments: This solution helps the teacher get to the root of the issue so that the student can be helped properly. I think it's good to consider it could be lice or it could be stress, but to make sure the student does not feel singled out if there is going to be any kind of lice check. The teacher can also speak with the parents to find out if this is a habit of the child's. Spoken from a place of concern and wanting to care for the child, the parent might appreciate this and also shed some light on the issue.

Comments: I agree, it could be due to stress so it's best not to assume right away it's lice but definitely talk to the student and discuss your concerns.
