  Case: Baseball Parent
I have a student who is really involved in baseball. He repeatedly does not bring in his homework and tells me he does not have time because he has baseball practice and games every night. When I spoke to his parents, they told me baseball was his passion and his dream and they supported that. They said they would work on the homework issue. It has been three weeks since I had that conversation and nothing has changed. How can I stress to this child's parents that education should be a priority above baseball and how important it is to complete and submit his homework each week in a more effective way.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This would be a very straightforward approach, but I would do the research on the odds (percentages) of any player making it to the Major League system. I am assuming that is his goal, as well as his parents. I have done the research before, and though I can't quite remember the numbers, it was a sobering statistic. Unfortunately baseball has become a big business, and it's not just a game for fun anymore. Also, google John Smoltz's Baseball Hall of Fame acceptance speech from earlier this year. In it, he deals with this issue, and does a great job with it. Share this with the family, or your whole class. Everyone needs a back up plan, and education is the key.

Comments: I would not refer to education as a backup plan, but explain to the child that they need an education in order to take their baseball career far. In college, if you want to play a sport you must have good grades.

Comments: I don't think this would do anything, but kill the dream of one of your students. We, as teachers, strive to tell our students they can achieve anything they can put their minds to. Bringing up statistics might make the child feel like all the time spent playing baseball was worth nothing in the end.

Comments: Being straight forward is always good. But I think presenting the parents the chances of him making it to MLB is a bit much.

Comments: This solution makes it seem that the teacher is about to kill the dream. This logic can be taken to any student that is trying to achieve the impossible.

Comments: Even though this solution is relevant to the case I do not think that the research serve the purpose of solving the issue. This is a issue that does not concern the entire class either. Instead, there needs to be a meeting with parents and if needed bringing in administration or even the coach for back up.

Comments: I think that sharing this information with the whole class is very inappropriate and almost calling the student out and embarrassing him in front of his peers. I would take it to higher administration to talk to the students parents.

Comments: Not a good solution to show lack of respect for education. Maybe connecting math to baseball and still doing homework, but not show the student well good luck hope it works for you.

Comments: While this is a solution, it is not the best option. By informing the student of these facts you are essentially stating that you have no regard for their goals and to give up a dream that may be motivating them to be successful.
