  Case: Parents Against Common Core
Parents are often close minded about anything related to Common Core. At this point, I believe it is more of a political stance, than a true disconnect in understanding. Parents automatically shut down, and allow for their children to do so as well when instruction is not "the old fashioned way". What are so tips on opening parents up to new ways of thinking?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I always tell parents that I will introduce several methods for solving problems. I leave it up to the students to choose the one that is most comfortable for them. I also inform parents to expect writing from every subject area, including math!

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case No
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: This solution failed explain to parents the reason why common core was implemented and how students will benefit learning the new standards. I think the teacher has great ideas, such as allowing students to choose which math solution they are ore comfortable with using.

Comments: This doesn't seem to have much to do with the case - the question was how to handle a situation where a parent and/or student refuses to participate in Common Core activities.

Comments: I think it is important to inform parents of the different methods that are being taught, but you can't really stray too far from the requirements. This is a tough situation.

Comments: Parents need guidances when it comes to Common Core, it's a new thing in our schools and parents are freaking out. You first have to classify that Common Core isn't scary it's just Standards you as the teacher has to go by. Try providing them with information before scaring the parents.

Comments: I disagree, the Common Core should be uniform throughout the classroom and students should not be able to pick their own methods.
