  Case: Is Retesting Ethical?
We have started implementing retests at my school. If students make below a 70, they have the option to retest. Many feel as though a lot of retests would be fluffing the grade, for once they master that standard, we eliminate that low grade and only count the higher one. Is this the right mindset?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I understand the idea behind the retest, but I'm not sure it should be able to take it more than a second time if they still don't get above a 70. I would also make so the students that are retesting can only get a 70 because to the students that pass it on the first time is not fair to them for the student that retest gets a higher grade. I don't believe that is the right mindset.

Comments: I agree completely that students should only be able to retest one time because if students can take the test over and over it does not create a challenging academic environment. Also, if students do retest the maximum score they should receive is a 70.

Comments: I see where you are coming from saying that they shouldn't be able to get a grade above the 70 but I don't believe that it will motivate the students if the highest they can get is the 70 and I also believe that it is not fair if not everyone is able to correct their mistakes

Comments: I think I see what you're getting at because I've seen retests where students can't earn above a certain high-end grade because of a curve, but what you're saying doesn't seem to make sense to all students retesting. Perhaps a 70% is better than earning a 45%, but for the student who earned a 68% or 70%, it would not make sense to limit the grade to 70% maximum.

Comments: This is a great point. It doesn't seem fair to a student who receives a 71 that a student who received a 65 could retest for an A.

Comments: I do not think it is fiar to only allow the students to get a 70 on their retest. I think giving them one chnace is fair but making it so they only get a 70 is not.

Comments: I agree and see both sides. But, I also think letting them retest for half the point amount could be useful.

Comments: This solution is not helpful at all. The point of assessment is not to compare a student's abilities or scores with each other. Therefore, it would not be unfair to allow a retest. The point of a test is to assess a students knowledge on the content. If they fail an assessment, a teacher should take extra steps to ensure that the students truly learns the course material. A retest should be used after following up on the student's knowledge, and the scores on retest should be given as they are earned since the student is still showing progression and learning.
