  Case: Is Retesting Ethical?
We have started implementing retests at my school. If students make below a 70, they have the option to retest. Many feel as though a lot of retests would be fluffing the grade, for once they master that standard, we eliminate that low grade and only count the higher one. Is this the right mindset?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I believe that it is fluffing the grade because it creates a sense of learned helplessness. Specifically, if students know that they can take a test as many times as they need to they will stop valuing the content and will study less. I believe the best option is to allow for test corrections where students can correct the questions they miss, but have to provide an explanation for why the new answer they chose is correct. This will still give students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery and will still put value on the original test. The points they get back should not be the same as what the questions were originally worth.

Comments: I believe that retesting is not the right solution as well but doing test corrections to show that they can do the skill is right they have to be able to figure out and show your where you went wrong.

Comments: It's easy for teachers to go over the answers to a test after everyone has finished, and is especially helpful if there were many students who scored low. This not only allows a chance for credit with further learning, but also helps students truly understand the material rather than simply memorizing what would have been correct for the retest.

Comments: I also agree with the sense of learned helplessness. Students should be able to correct his or her own mistakes and understand why the mistake was made instead of someone doing it for them.

Comments: i personally believe that retesting is a good thing. I think tests are weighed on way too much and really tend to stress kids out and give them anxiety. Everyone should have the option to retest though, not just a 70% or below is my opinion because like a comment said below that makes it not fair. The reason I believe in retesting is because if the student is eventually learning what they need to know, then what is the issue? I do see some down sides and agree with what you said, I just think that the student understanding the concept in the end is what is actually important.

Comments: This is a great idea, I love it. I agree that allowing students to retake tests so often would increase the risk of students lowering their studying and things like that. Requiring explanations as to why they chose different answers the second time around makes students have to think and apply knowledge even more so that they can retain it forever.

Comments: I think this is essentially letting the students retest. Students should get the opportunity to test multiple times, especially when high stakes testing gives so many students anxiety.

Comments: I rated this response as useful because it is one of the more ethical ways to handle retesting. It gives students an opportunity to master the topics they did not understand when they originally took the test. It is an easy solution to test failure, and can be implemented rather painlessly. I did not say this solution was original because I have seen test corrections all throughout my high school experience and it seems to be a common practice.

Comments: I think there should be an emphasis on the importance of studying, however I do think that sometimes students can have a hard time even if they do study a good amount. I struggle a great deal with math and found that even after I studied really hard- I would still do poorly on tests. I also think that some students do not perform well during tests due to nervousness or testing anxiety. I think that it solely depends on the student and scenario.

Comments: The test correction alternative is highly effective. It ensures that students express some form of progression in order to make up points by showing their work. It also shows formative assessment which allows students to grow after a failed task rather than simply receive a bad grade.
