Case: Touchy Students
I have a 4th grade male student who seems to be touchy with me. He's always touching my arms, poking me, and touching my hair. I always remind him to keep his hands to himself, but he always comes back doing the same thing. How should I handle this?

Have you thought about talking to a counselor about the student's behavior? We recently had to do a training session at my school about identifying children who might be abused, and I'm not saying that is the situation here, but one of the indicators is a child who touches others and demands the attention of an adult. If this is not the situation (and I hope it is not!) perhaps you need to have a parent-teacher conference and make the parents aware of the issue and gain their cooperation on getting the child to stop this behavior. |

| Comments: I like the idea of the parent teacher conference. Maybe they can give you some incite as to why he might be doing that. He might do that to everyone and he has some sort of social problem. It always good to talk to the parent and get them involved in what is going on. |

| Comments: I agree I think you should have a parent-teacher conference to address the issue. I would make sure the school counselor is present at the meeting as well, so a plan can be put into place on how to handle this student moving forward. |

| Comments: You can never be too careful with situations that may involve abuse. If these signs do come from abuse then it is the duty of a teacher to make the school aware of it. If it does not stem from abuse, the parents could be of some help and so they should be included. |
