Case: ESOL in Science
What are your suggestions for helping ESOL students understand the content and vocabulary in science?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have found that using thinking maps help out a lot and providing pictures with content helps as well. Also, I have few students in my classes that speak both English and Spanish fluently so I have those students work with the students who are having trouble understanding. |

Comments: I love thinking maps and have students use both native and English to complete them is a great idea. |

Comments: If it's possible to provide bilingual support for students I think that's great so long as they are still being introduced and scaffolded into using the English words and terms from the unit. I love using thinking maps for myself and my students, it's a great visual tool and lends itself to visual aides like pictures very well. |

Comments: I like this idea because it still has the student working on an assignment with substance while helping him/her develop language skills. |

Comments: The only thing that I disagree with here is that not all classrooms have bi-lingual students, so that should not be counted on. Also, things can get lost in translation from one student to another. |

Comments: I have found that maps end up in confusion. Also, you should not have any other student speak to them in their native language unless they ask for it. If you were to do that without them asking, they may feel embarrassed. |
