Case: Pushing an agenda
Carrie teaches at a very socially conservative public school in a small town. In order to advance in her town, things like church attendance and voting Republican seem to be taken in to unspoken account. Carrie has recently heard one of her fellow teachers telling students her personal story of salvation, telling students her personal beliefs on the immorality of homosexuality and playing Christian music during class. She also witnessed a teacher correcting to female students who were holding hands while walking down the hallway, telling them "You need to set a good example, so don't hold hands." Carrie feels that the teacher's behavior is incorrect, but fears that if she speaks up, she will not have her contract renewed. What should she do?

You should speak to an administrator to address the issue. It is not a question of opinion, it is a legal issue. If you witness the inappropriate behavior you are responsible for speaking up for the students' sake. You should provide specific examples for the administrator so that it can be promptly addressed. |
