  Case: Non speaking ESOL Student
I teach a kindergarten ESOL student in an Early Intervention Program math classroom. He comprehends English but appears to be a selective mute. He has only spoken a few words to me since the beginning of the year, yet he can follow all verbal directions given in English. What is the best way to increase his speech in the classroom?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
You say that he is understands all of the verbal commands given in English, which would mean to me that he understands the basic English language. Most of the time it sounds like he only talks when he is ready to. This could be considered that child's silent period, were he just wants to take in that language and not try to use it unless required to. Unless you need him to talk during class I would not think that you should be worried and let him learn like this as is becuase he might just start talknig on his own. If it is truely important to get him to talk in class, pair him up a with a buddy or make more group work so he will interact with more people and more likey be requreied or willing to talk.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: The pre-production stage is what this child appears to be in, which is also known as the silent period. Allow him to progress into the second stage of development, early production, where he will begin to branch out and talk more. If he understands it, he is on the right track.

Comments: I think that it is possible for the student to be in a silent period so to speak, but the teacher should still make an effort to get the student to participate in class. Whether that be via working with pairs with a student who the teacher notices is friendly with this student, or trying to talk more with them one-on-one without the pressure of speaking in front of the class.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this. I agree that this is the child's silent period so you should not be worried, he is in the preproduction stage. If you really want him to start talking more, I would pair him with another student which could be less intimidating than speaking for the whole class to hear him.

Comments: This is useful in that it I important for a teacher to know the various phases an ESOL student will go through. Pre-production, or the silent period, is one of the phases a student will experience. Students will progress through these at different times and it is important to give the student adequate time to go through each phase.

Comments: This solution is well explained, the student might remain silent sometimes because he is going through the "silent period stage".
