  Case: Bathroom passes?
How do high school teachers handle bathroom issues? When I issue my students passes, they lose them or use them all and still ask to go to the bathroom. I can't tell them they can't go to the bathroom when they are sitting there telling me they really have to go, but I know some of them aren't really going to the bathroom or just want to leave for a minute. I've tried every system and can't find one that works. Any ideas?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I subbed in an alternative high school a while ago that had a strict bathroom policy. Students were given a sheet each week that documented their time in the bathroom. They were given one opportunity to go in the morning (1st 2 classes) and 1 chance in the afternoon (last 2 classes). The teacher had to fill out the time they left and the time they returned. After that they could not go at all.
In my elementary class, when students use their bathroom passes and still have to go I ask them if it's worth their recess time. If they really have to go then they'll take the few minutes on the fence (I usually make them sit out 1 or 2 max) if they don't have to go then they stay in class.
I know another teacher who rewards their students for how many bathroom passes they have left at the end of the week. They can trade them in the class store or extra free time.

Comments: This is great for holding students accountable. Young students value their recess time and many times are not willing to sacrifice it. Just make sure that they understand that if they really need to go, they must.

Comments: Being given two opportunities to go to the restroom during class time still holds the possible issue of students misusing their restroom passes.

Comments: Somehow I don't think limiting students to twice a day is realistic, especially for high school girls. Cases of emergency aren't regarded here.

Comments: If I was in this situation, I would use this solution. This solution makes exceptions for student who really have an unexpected need to go to the restroom.

Comments: I think it is a great idea to log everytime they go to the bathroom. I subbed for a 5th grade class and the teacher wanted me to document who asked to go to the library to get a new book. She said to only allow two at a time and write their names, she said it should keep them honest. (she knew many had just started new books, and few would actually have to go) I like this idea!

Comments: What would they do for students who just use the bathroom a lot? Even though this is a good idea, it does not sound easy for a whole school to implement it, and also I feel it just isn't right to limit someone's bathroom use if they REALLY need to go.

Comments: I don't know about you, but as an adult person, I still cannot control my bladder on a timed schedule. Accidents happen. Bathroom urges are not that predictable. I would not do this.

Comments: It doesn't seem fair to penalize the students by making them miss some recess time. However, I do like the idea of a reward for however many passes are left at the end of the week (or even semester).

Comments: I disagree with both solutions. Having teachers document the bathroom habits of their students is needlessly time-consuming. Also, punishing a child for going to the bathroom is unfair to students who actually need to.

Comments: I don't agree with penalizing the student for going to the restroom by taking away their recess time. Especially in elementary some kids can't control it and if you implement this it could lead to accidents because kids won't want to miss out on recess time.
