  Case: Tattoos on Job Applicant
We just interviewed a highly qualified teacher for an immediate opening at our school. She is very well spoken, well educated, and experienced, but she has multiple tattoos that are visible. Should the tattoos eliminate her from the job since she will be teaching in an elementary setting?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think you need to think about what the parents in your community will think. I know the parents in my community wouldn't care, but parents in the neighboring community would. If she were interviewing for a high school job I wouldn't think twice about it, but those are people's babies, so consider their overall take on things to make the best decision for everyone. You wouldn't want to hire a teacher who will be criticized and treated unfairly by parents.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) No
The suggested solution is relevant to the case No
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: While I agree that it can make things more difficult for a teacher who isn't welcomed by parents, I don't think that the parents need to be the sole factor when deciding whether or not to hire a teacher. If the proposed teacher is qualified and believed to do a good job, then the tattoos she has shouldn't be an issue.

Comments: I think that by doing this we are discriminating against a person who was stated to be qualified and well educated thus not allowing her an opportunity based on her appearance is unacceptable.

Comments: I think this solution does not over a wide enough fix to the problem. A principal does not need to only consider the parent's opinions as they are not the only opinions that count. Instead, the principal must consider what this teacher offers to the school, and the district rules. Then from there discuss the issues of the tattoos, but not letting them be the only reason why someone does not get a job.

Comments: I do not understand why they should think about the community. If the teacher is qualified they should hire them. If the parents have an issue with it, they will email the teacher personally and ask her about it.

Comments: I understand where you are coming from, but this is exactly what we teach our students not to do. Not to judge a book by its cover.

Comments: As important as parents opinions are, sometimes it doesn't matter what people think of you, as long as you're qualified, that is the most important thing above all.
