Case: Inappropriate Comments to Students
What do you think is the best way to address inappropriate comments a teacher makes to his students? I have overheard him tell them they need their butts worn out, they'll fail fifth grade, they are lazy, etc. His comments are very negative and inappropriate in my opinion.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would take this directly to the administration and let them handle the issue as they see fit. If a teacher is making these comments they need to be reprimanded and it does not need to come from you- but from above. That teacher needs to understand how damaging these comments are and how much trouble they could get him in. Parents would be outraged if they knew that their son or daughter's teacher was telling them these things! I would also say you should keep documentation that you contacted the administration about this issue. |

Comments: The first step should always be to communicate with the teacher first to get the whole story. |

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! I don't feel that administration should be contacted as the first solution when not necessary. Just the notion of a colleague being aware and concerned about this behavior could curb the way he speaks to the children. |

Comments: This is the best solution. The administration should be the ones dealing with the teacher and taking action |

Comments: I think that talking with the teacher first is a better idea rather than going to administration and "accusing" the teacher. This way everyone is respectful and professional with each other. |

Comments: I see that this wasn't the most popular answer, but I agree with it. A teacher should never be saying such things to a student...ever. If another teacher knew that you heard him/her speaking that way, or knows you were there when it happened, and you can get in just as much trouble if administration finds out. You have a professional responsibility to the studentfirst and foremost. Administration should always be made aware. Of course there are instances where you can politely speak with the teacher about situations, but in my opinion, this is a little more serious. |

Comments: This situation can be iffy. I do agree, you as a teacher should do something about the situation. |

Comments: I agree with this solution. Things could get messy if you try to handle it yourself, so it is best to go straight to administration. |

Comments: I agree with this solution, taking the issue higher is better than that teacher addressing the issue. |
