Case: Lexile Levels
A fifth grade teacher teaches a class of 25 students. The Lexile levels of these students vary greatly. There are several students with Lexile levels in the 200 and 300s, while some students have levels in the 800 and 900s. What can this teacher due to ensure that she is meeting the needs of all students and that all students are showing growth?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
First, would encourage students to read AR books from the library that matches their Lexile level. I would closely monitor these books so they are reading on the appropriate level outside of my instruction as well. Secondly, I would divide students into quartiles based on a range of Lexile levels. Their groups would be based on the range rather than an exact level. Again, I would closely monitor their comprehension at their level to determine whether to increase that level, which would show growth. |

| Comments: I remember having reading groups throughout elementary school. It made sure that everyone was actively reaching for higher goals, without feeling overwhelmed or bored by the level of text. The teacher worked with each group at a different time, asking questions and having small group discussions. As a student, I loved those groups. |

| Comments: I like the solution as the teacher can implement it in their classrooms and keep track of how the students are doing in regards to their L exiles. By having the small groups the teacher can do remediation and help students to improve their reading skills and strategies that can improve their Lexie scores. Great idea! |
