  Case: Teacher-Parent Relationship
I am a fairly young teacher, and I teach in the same high school I graduated from. Therefore, I know a lot of the parents of the students I teach and coach. I had a relationship with the parents prior to teaching their kids. Therefore, there have times where that parent comes up to me and asks me about a student other than their own because their child is about to start dating them or hanging out with them. Unfortunately, I have to tell these parents that I cannot discuss with them another student that is not their own. How can I express this to the parents without straining the relationship that I have had with them for many years prior?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
the best thing to say when they ask questions about another student is "I don't know much about him/her".

Comments: The parents know that you know about the students, this would just make you look like a liar.

Comments: I don't think this i a good idea because the parent may be persistent with the questioning a proceed with "Well can you find out?". This parent needs to know that it is not okay to expect this teacher to relay information back to them, even if they are friends. The teacher needs to make this clear and understood.

Comments: This is just putting off their questions. If you want them to stop asking, you need to establish boundaries. Telling other parents that you aren't able to discuss other students would prevent further questions.

Comments: This is not a good solution. It is against the law to discuss anything about another student with someone who is not the parent or guardian.

Comments: This seems like an unprofessional and untruthful answer to give a parent that you have a relationship with. Simply telling them that you cannot disclose student information for safety and legality purposes would do the trick.
