  Case: Piercings and Gauges
Within the past couple of years, there has been an increase in students that have many different facial piercings along with gauges in their ears and other areas of their face. As a teacher, I find this distracting and disturbing. I understand that students are simply trying to express themselves. However, I feel as if this is not appropriate for school purposes. What are some ways I can appropriately present this to an administrator without coming across as being close-minded?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have run into the same problem at my school. I am a member of the leadership team there. We came together as a team to discuss how this may be distracting to some of the students in our classroom. I would suggest you do as we did, and come up with a written plea to the administrators at your school. Be sure to state the problem, WHY it is a problem, and several solutions. The principal was very pleased that we did not just present him with a problem or complaint, but we also started the process for him by presenting a starting point for solutions.

The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I think this solution is very productive and a good option. You not only show the administrator that this is not a single person complaining as well as showing him/her that you have ideas on how to put a solution in place.

Comments: I think teachers need to be more accepting of other people's individual styles and expressions. It is disrespectful to the student to tell them they can't dress or adorn themselves the way they wish, especially if their piercings are not a distraction to themselves. To say that this is a problem is simply a matter of opinion, not fact.

Comments: I do not really agree with this solution. Unless there are specific rules and regulations in the student code of conduct that prohibit them from aging these types of piercings and things on their body while in school, there isn't much you can do about it except let it go. Students should be allowed to express their creativity and this isn't a harmful manner.

Comments: This is not going to solve the problem, freedom of expression shouldn't be taken just because a teacher doesn't like it.

Comments: I have to disagree with this statement. For someone who has only been out of high school a few years I don't ever remember piercings being a distraction. Normally people getting piercings done to express themselves or just because not because want to play with them.
