Case: Racially charged comments for the sake of humor
Teens today use humor to mask a myriad of racial issues. It is not uncommon to hear a student say "Thanks, Obama" to something that has nothing to do with our President or for an African American students to claim "racism!" with a big smile on their face over something that clearly had nothing to do with race. Many teens love the Key and Peele comedy shorts that plays off of this type of humor as well. As teachers, how should we address this or use it? Is their humor healthy or counterproductive?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Teachers should not use this type of humor. As far as it being healthy or counterproductive I would say neither. As long as students are not taking offense to the humorous comments and the comments aren't causing any trouble I would just let teens be teens.

Comments: Yes, teens do copy a lot theysee on T.V. This is nothing new and I don't think it is productive to make issues of every remark that students made unless the words are highly offending.

Comments: Sometimes teenagers are just being teenagers, it is the age frame of trying to find out who you are/ want to be and trying to fit In with peers. As long as no-one is getting offended or upset by small comments I would not go to crazy over the situation.

Comments: Teens will be teens but when a student gets hurt from a racism joke being made, teachers need to stop it. It is better if there is a week dedicated to racism in everyday lives.

Comments: I get the idea of relating to your students but it is still not okay for the work place and school is training for that.
