Case: The Gifted Parents
A studnet in Mr. Smith class has always done well but has never showed any interest in or talent for a gifted program that is offered by the school. The child's parents are telling Mr. Smith that they want him to recomend their child be put into this program because they were both gifted as is his older sibling. Mr. Smith wants to do what best for the child but not to be yelled at by the parents. Should Mr. Smith put he recomend the child for the gifted program?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Yes, it is my understanding that parents have the right to request this. Just put in the parent request for testing. If the child passes, he passes. If not, then you have done your part. |

Comments: I believe that if the child has never shown any interest the teacher should include the child in the decision making. There may be a reason that the child does not wish to enter the gifted program that with out intervention he will not comunicate to his parents. |

Comments: I would not just submit the request without first discussing this situation fully with the parents. |

Comments: I would not do this. I think the parents should be aware of the situation and what is going on in the classroom before just testing their student. |

Comments: Well it is technically allowed for some parents to request a child be tested for a gifted program in this situation that does not necessarily mean that it is right for the student to be put through the testing process if you do not truly believe that they will be passed into the gifted program. All this will do is end up hurting the students feelings and causing a much undue stress for the entire family and on the teacher |

Comments: I don't feel that this is the best solution. I feel that the parents and teacher definitely need to sit down and discuss the student's strengths and weaknesses in depth. |

Comments: This solution is disrespectful to the student because the teacher would be disregarding the students willingness to be in the program. Also, the child might not be gifted and the parents (who think that because they were gifted that their children are automatically gifted) might not respond positively if their child does not pass. This solution will cause more strife than it will help the situation. |
