  Case: Piercings and Gauges
Within the past couple of years, there has been an increase in students that have many different facial piercings along with gauges in their ears and other areas of their face. As a teacher, I find this distracting and disturbing. I understand that students are simply trying to express themselves. However, I feel as if this is not appropriate for school purposes. What are some ways I can appropriately present this to an administrator without coming across as being close-minded?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I believe if you make a big deal out of this small issue then the students may become rebellious by increasing their facial piercings and increasing their gauge sizes. Instead of making the situation negative try to turn it into a positive learning experience. The students can do research on how piercings can affect their future jobs or how piercings have changed over time. At the end of the day they are trying to express themselves.

Comments: I agree with you. The teacher should definitely not make a big deal out of something that is not causing a problem with the learning going on in the classroom. I like your idea of turning it into a positive and learning experience. After all, we are here to teach.

Comments: I like this idea because I do not think anyone has the right to tell someone to take out a piercing. It is up to the individual to make a change. Research can be a great tool. Nice post.

Comments: This is a great way to involve the students in the process of handling the distraction, but I would check the handbook and speak to administration.

Comments: As an individual with piercings and (gasp!) tattoos, I feel like this solution is a great way to turn a perceived negative situation into a positive learning experience. Unless someone is removing/inserting their jewelry in class I don't see why it should be a problem in the first place.

Comments: I think this a great solution. You can provide why it may not be good in the job world, but at the end of the day just let them express themselves.

Comments: I would never tell a student to "research how this could affect your future" as it sounds judgemental and closed minded. Times have changed and we need to grow with the time.
A more appropriate question would be "how do piercings represent different cultures or traditions" but even still, if it isn't a distraction for other students, move on

Comments: I don't think kids will rebel as long as they know that it's not school appropriate. They can wear them outside of school as much as they want. The same rules apply at different work places too.

Comments: I agree. They are just piercings and chances are they won't have them forever. Just explain the repercussions of having those piercings in regard to professional employment and that's all you can pretty much do.

Comments: I don't think students are going to increase their piercing number or size, however I do think it will frustrate them more. Also some jobs are very accepting of piercings.

Comments: I do not agree with this solution. Times have changed, so for other students they are more than likely used to the piercings and other "distractions." I would not want my students to feel that they are not "normal" and that they are distracting students when they are not. If they are playing with their piercings and not paying attention i would bring it to their attention and talk with them about it.

Comments: Good idea and students should be allowed to express themselves piercings and tattoos are everywhere now and I don't think it bothers or distracts students from learning.

Comments: I think this is kind of insulting to the students who are expressing themselves. It furthers the stigma that piercings decrease a person's ability to perform a job.
