  Case: Is Retesting Ethical?
We have started implementing retests at my school. If students make below a 70, they have the option to retest. Many feel as though a lot of retests would be fluffing the grade, for once they master that standard, we eliminate that low grade and only count the higher one. Is this the right mindset?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have given students their tests back, let them use their notes and correct each problem they missed. If they show all of their work, which proves they went back to their notes, and get the right answer then I will give them half of the credit back for the problem. In your situation, I think the highest a child should be able to make is a 70 if they make below that a retest. It is unfair to students who prepared the first time if the students who waited until the retest, get extra time to study and can outscore them. I also think it sets up a mindset of "this test doesn't matter, they'll just let me retake it" with the students which is only handicapping them in the end.

Comments: I agree with your response 100%. I don't think it is fair to let students retest, therefore, giving partial credit for questions that prove they did work seems like a fair solution. I would handle this situation similarly.

Comments: I agree that students should not be unfairly rewarded with extra time to make a high grade if they score below a 70 the first time. I also believe that they should be allowed to use a poor test grade as a learning experience.

Comments: I love this idea! By giving the paper back and having the students work on the questions they missed, they can both raise their points and also finally understand the material they may have struggled on.

Comments: I agree that giving students the opportunity to review their tests and use their notes to make corrections is a good idea. This will encourage students to get clarification on concepts and ideas that they originally struggled with. Allowing students to make corrections will help them develop an even greater understanding of the material and promote future success .

Comments: A great way for the student to not feel helpless and yet still be able to have responsibility in correcting their mistakes.

Comments: I don't believe that it is as harmful as expressed when all students have the opportunity it retake. The problems listed here here more so implies that retesting need to be improved not eliminated.

Comments: I never thought of the idea of capping the retest grade but I think that is a great solution that way those students who were not able to retest because their grade was "too high" do not end up upset
