Case: I Don't Just Teach Your Child
I have a child who never turns in homework. I email his mom weekly with updates, which usually state that he has turned in no homework. She always wants me to send the assignments home for them to complete over the weekend. I finally told her that that is not fair to other students and I cannot keep grading all of his homework assignments when they back up. Now she has requested that I send her an electronic copy of the homework daily. These students are in the 7th grade. How do I professionally let her know that her child is not the only child I teach and I cannot do this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Maybe a homework packet would be helpful. Try putting a packet together of the homework for the week to send home or via electronically. What might also work is talking with the student on a personal level. Ask them what after school activities they enjoy such as sports. Explain to them they cannot do sports if they do not keep their grades up. You could always speak with a team member or a previous teacher the student has had and see if this is a new issue or reoccurring it may help with the next step.

Comments: I only don't like this because I don't believe its possible to create a homework packet for a 7th grade class, and then expect them to keep it when the student can't even do his homework now.

Comments: I do not feel "scaring" the student is effective or would go over very well with the parents. I think another approach may be more positive in the long run.

Comments: This is just doing what the mom requested which as the teacher mentioned They can not do anymore. I like the idea of having to maintain grades to continue after school activities however I feel this should be implemented by the mother.

Comments: This is a good idea but putting a homework packet together for multiple classes of 7th graders who are suppose to learned responsibility and accountability, will not help them in the end and create more work for the teacher.

Comments: I disagree here. As the teacher, it is not your role or position to tell the student what he or she can and cannot do outside of school. Homework is the expectation and responsibility of the student, and that is your job as the teacher to facilitate it. Extracurricular activities fall under the parent's facilitation.
