  Case: Unmotivated Student
I have a student who refuses to take any type of assessment seriously, not to mention his lack of effort in the classroom daily. I have called home several times, he has seen the counselor, he has a BIP, but he still will not take a test seriously. He bubbles in answers or circles them and then lays his head down. No amount of prodding, bribing, encouragement has helped yet. What haven't I tried that might help? How do I motivate him?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
You have said that no amount of prodding or bribing is working well i think it comes down getting held back or not. While i understand holding a studnet back should not be done lightly but that may be one of the only optinon with what it sounds like.Ask the administartion to make sure this can be done. Tell him and his parents that if he doesnt find some kind of motivation for assesments he might be held back or removed from class that his are in.

Comments: I disagree with this strategy of using the threat of being held back. Students are aware of the consequence and the reminder may frustrate and already stubborn child. The task is to motivate and inspire not challenge. I am unsure which county you are in, but most school districts have a no fail policy unless the teacher may show that they have done several interventions and supports for the student. I find love and keep expecting and believing has just as much influence as threatening with negative rewards/ consequences.

Comments: I don't think this is a good suggestion when we are still missing quite a bit of information. Retention is a last resort action, not a threat to use to motivate students.

Comments: I do not feel like this is a viable solution. I think if the only thing we can motivate a child with is a threat than we are not doing our jobs as teachers. Yes the student has difficulties with test taking but that doesn't me he is incompetent and should be held back.

Comments: I think holding the students back or threatening to may be taking things to the extremes, and may not fix the problem, but may only give he students -and his parents- more anxiety.

Comments: In order to find a solution, a problem must first be identified. It is important to understand why the student is experiencing difficulty during exams, so that the teacher can make modifications to fit the student and help him or her succeed. Holding a student back for not completing exams does not solve the problem.

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! I believe this is not a solution, it is just giving up on a student. I think that it is our jobs as teachers or future teachers to never give up on our students and to find a way to motivate them and show them that they can do great things.

Comments: I disagree because holding a child back because of lack of motivation might inhibit his motivation even more so. He will not see himself in the classroom.

Comments: You can't just get rid of the child as a problem. That will make the child feel really bad especially if the kid has a BIP.

Comments: If the student knows the questions verbally, then I don't think he needs to be held back. There could be problems that the teachers don't know about this student yet.
