Case: Lexile Levels
A fifth grade teacher teaches a class of 25 students. The Lexile levels of these students vary greatly. There are several students with Lexile levels in the 200 and 300s, while some students have levels in the 800 and 900s. What can this teacher due to ensure that she is meeting the needs of all students and that all students are showing growth?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Set up two different groups. One set would be divided by grouping those in the 800s with likeminded students, the 200s with the 200s and the 400s with the 400s, etc. The other set of groups would be set up by listing the students in order from highest to lowest. Cut the list in half and set it side by side. Then group according to pairs, This way you don't have someone working with a peer that is so vastly different from the others in the group.
Set up stations for each set. For example Monday, Wednesday, Friday you could have the likeminded groups working together on assignments at each station. The higher groups would be given more challenging assignments at their stations. Tuesday and Thursday, you could have the column pairs working, moving from station to station.During these days encourage the students to talk though their thought process with the assignments. This will help them show their understanding and they will be "teaching" the others that work on a level below them. |

Comments: I like this solution a lot, I think giving those students at a higher level more challenging assignments will help them continue to improve, but you are also having students at different levels work together and not completely isolating them. |
