  Case: Complaining Parent
Coach Smith teaches PE and coaches a middle school softball team in her lifelong hometown. Although she diligently works daily to provide the best for all of her students and players, one mother simply will not let up. Every day this mother finds something to complain about whether it is about coaching styles, coaching techniques, or teaching practices. Many believe that the complaining is insignificant and simply an attempt to make things hard for Coach Smith. Although she has been patient throughout it all, it is beginning to bother her tremendously. What should she do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
She should reassure the parent that she is in charge and she has been doing this job for a while and has never had a complaint. If the parent does not let up I would get the principal or a higher authority so sit down with the parent and talk her through what and why she is doing and if the parent still wont give up I would kindly ask her to remove her daughter from the class or stop with the complaining.

Comments: You don't want to let the parent know that you have been "doing this job for a while and has never had a complaint" because it will most likely cause for more hostility.

Comments: Even though I agree that if the parent has a problem with the Coach then she could easily pull her child from the team, it is not fair to the child to miss out on great opportunities because their parent is not cooperative. I would certainly try other alternatives first.

Comments: "reassuring" seems combative. This may add fuel to the fire.

Comments: This is wrong, I would not do this. Very unprofessional- discuss the issue with the parent first.

Comments: I agree that having an administrator or another person of higher authority present for a meeting would be beneficial. However, it is unfair to the student to be removed from the class/team just because of a difficult parent. Removing the student would be unfairly penalizing her for actions he/she has no control over.

Comments: I don't think this would be a good idea because talking to the parent like that would increase the situation and potentially make the parent angrier. It is important to be professional and courteous to the parent even if they are being unrealistic and rude.

Comments: This is not the best approach. The student should not have to suffer because of the parents' complaints. I definitely think that getting administration involved is necessary, in order to have a conference with the parent, but I don't think it's fair to have her daughter removed from P.E.

Comments: If the coach were to say that she has never had a complaint, it would seem that she is being arrogant to the parent. Calmly explaining that she has taken the parents notes to considerations is a good idea.
