Case: I couldn't help it!
I'm a teacher that loves to get personable with her students. I show them that I care about them outside of my classroom. One night, I was supporting my students at a basketball game and one of my students needed a ride home from the game. She attempted to call her grandparents, parents, but no one answered. It was very dark outside. I decided to give her a ride. Is this against the code of ethics?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would have called the non emergency line for the police station and asked if there was a police officer in the area to take the student home. You NEVER give a student a ride home. |

Comments: While I completely understand, it could also land you in trouble. I'd take every step possible and DOCUMENT my efforts before giving the student a ride. If it went to any sort of hearing, you'd have your proof, and clearly leaving the student would be worse. But I would absolutely call a non-emergency line, and then if that wasn't an option, I'd call my supervisor(s) and either ask their permission (if they answered) or fill them in via voicemail BEFORE giving the student a ride. Cover your bases, people. |

Comments: I agree it's not the best thing to do. However, I wouldn't say never, sometimes the situation dictates options. |

Comments: I think that this is an excellent solution if you do not know the student very well, or if you do not know the parents very well, however it sounds like the teacher is on a very relatable level with the students and parents of the student, and felt that this was the most responsible and most appropriate answer to the situation |

Comments: I feel this is the best response. You don't want to leave the student to possibly be attacked or be alone and scared, but taking her home crosses a line. |
