  Case: Mastery Grading
Student A has tried very hard all semester on each assignment and assessment. They have shown progress over time but is currently failing. Student B is very capable but has played around the whole semester. He or she is failing, but could have been passing all along. Student B does well on assessments, but fails to complete or turn in all other assignments. How do you ensure that mastery grading is done fairly with the two students? Is it fair for student B to recieve a passing grade or the same privileges as student A?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Neither student should receive any special treatment. Student A and B should be assessed the same as students C and D based on this situation without any other background knowledge on the situation.

Comments: I agree that the should be assessed but child a could find no interest in the class and maybe that why they are not passing but they should still be evaluate for a learning disability.

Comments: agreed, student a could need a slower pas class, and the failing grade could help said student. student b needs a wke up call and deceivers what they earned

Comments: Although it is natural for a teacher to have a soft heart for a student who is working so hard yet still struggling, it is important for no student to be treated any differently then everybody else.

Comments: The grading system is there for a reason. It is hard to fail a child but grades are grades.

Comments: I do not think this is fair for students that struggle with learning or emotional disabilities or Language barriers. A teacher should consider the effort students make in order to get a grade.

Comments: I agree, giving them special treatment would not benefit either student and would be completely unfair to the rest of the class. Due to everyone taking the same test, I think all students should be treated the same. The only thing I could say would be to maybe edit the instructions for these two students so that they may better understand what is being asked of them.

Comments: I agree to an extent. If neither children have an IEP, then their treatment should be similar. It's hard to determine without more background info.
