Case: Unmotivated Student
I have a student who refuses to take any type of assessment seriously, not to mention his lack of effort in the classroom daily. I have called home several times, he has seen the counselor, he has a BIP, but he still will not take a test seriously. He bubbles in answers or circles them and then lays his head down. No amount of prodding, bribing, encouragement has helped yet. What haven't I tried that might help? How do I motivate him?

My suggestion would be to try and find a different form of assessment that might bring out this student's best. Even if we do not realize it a lot of students have anxiety when it comes to typical test taking situations. Doing essays, projects, or interviews might work better for this student. |

| Comments: You provided a good solution. All students are different. What works for one student might not work for another student. I agree that the teacher should try out many different forms to see what suits this particular student best and then work around that. I would also add that they should make an effort to talk to the student about things not related to education. Figure out the students likes an dislikes and use those to your advantage to motivate the student. Great solution. |

| Comments: I agree with this solution and would use it if I come across a situation like this. I think test anxiety could be playing a huge roll in this and cause the student to become disconnected with the test. |

| Comments: I agree that different students need to be approached differently when it comes to assessments. The student might feel as though they are bad at taking tests so they choose to purposely fail instead of trying and then failing, leading to disappointment in themselves. As the teacher, you need to find the students strong points and work from those. |

Comments: I like this solution but won't there be a time that they will have a test? Motivating students who are just there is difficult I would really try to find a way through some help of the parents and school counselor.

| Comments: I agree with this it is a great idea. Not all students learn the same ways I know personally I am a terrible test taker but it does not mean that I do not know the information. Talking to other teachers and parents and student and possibly having a meeting to find a solution for what is going to best help to benefit the student would help as well. |
