Case: Parents Who Are Friends With Your Colleagues
There is this particular parent who is friends with another teacher on the hall. A select number of students are chosen from each team to participate in POWER (Girls' STEM Program). The parent sends an email expressing her desire for her child to be a part of the program because her cousin is a part of the program. The teachers on the team assure the parent that the maximum number of students have been selected and the child cannot participate. The teacher down the hall gets an extra form and gives it to the student without talking to any teachers on the team. How would you handle the situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would explain to the parent that a mistake was made and as previously stated, the program is at capacity. I would offer the parent to place their student on a waiting list and allow the student into the program if another student drops out for any reason. I would also encourage the parent to reach out to the parent of the relative in the program to have information shared that would be beneficial to her child, even if they are unable to be in the program at this time.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: I feel that although this a good solution it is not the best being that the problem hear was not the communication between the teacher who is dealing with the child directly but rather the teacher down the hall who knows the child's parent. Thus, a solution that address the teacher down the hall would be more adequate.

Comments: Clearly since a mistake at this level was made, I would think that the conversation of correcting this issue should not only remain to the teacher and parent. Instead there needs to be administration involved too. I will agree that the student may go ahead and receive information though but for the program for the following year to prepare.

Comments: I am not sure that taking the program away from the child is at all a good solution. This can do unnecessary harm to the child. I would not do this.

Comments: While this would bring balance back to the group, it seems like this would unfairly penalize the student who the exception was made for. The student didn't do anything wrong.

Comments: I do not agree with this solution. I think the administration needs to contact the parent and speak with the teacher who went behind the others backs. I would not try this solution.

Comments: I would never do this. I think the student has to be accepted because if not you could really upset them. I think the teacher who informed them that they could participate should be help accountable for their actions.

Comments: This solution places the parent in the middle of a problem that is truly between the teachers. The issue should be worked out before the parent is told how it will be handled, so that the teachers are in agreement when they present the solution to the parent. The parent should not be hearing two different things from two different teachers.
