Case: Kids or Products?
With a vast variety of researched based information to state the contrary , schools have decided to limit the recess for elementary students to 15 minutes in the district. Students and teachers continue to deal with behavior issues in the class which can greatly impact classroom instruction. I believe part of this problem lies in the lack of free time allotted for the students. They are after all children. Recess promotes team work, verbal communication, sportsmanship, exercise, and creative expression through the arts. Unfortunately, the present approach is to run students through the process of learning as if this will produce an atypical product. When children are authentic and need the time to decompress from instruction as well as converse with their peer group with limited adult influence. At least allow the students to have a full thirty minute recess. They are children not bottles of Cola.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I agree the lessening of recess has effected the behavior negatively. The teacher could implement activities in the classroom where they move around, go outside or even just taking a break to watch a dance video when things get wild. |

Comments: I agree with you that decreasing recess time is not a good option for students academically or physically. However, the idea of implementing movement is a good idea, but it should not only be used when things get wild. The students may think when they get out of hand it is a reward for them to get this wiggle time. Instead, set distinct times when they get this wiggle time. |

Comments: I agree. Even as a college student, I find I need time to decompress. I feel that student who have this time will have less behavior problems as they have the freedom they need to be strong achievers, make friends, and develop social skills. |

Comments: I agree that providing activities with physical activity is a great way to make up for the lost recess time. |

Comments: The idea of a dance video is a great suggestion! Especially for younger students that get antsy throughout the day. |

Comments: It just needs to be more engaging for the students, like having something everyone can participate in. |
