Case: Parents Who Complete Student Projects
A particular project is given at the beginning of the nine weeks. Students are to complete it at home and bring it in on or before the due date. A rubric and directions for the project have been given. You allow the students time to work on the project during class or particular days. When the project is due, the student brings in an elaborate project and it is obvious that the student has not done the project. When you ask the student questions during their presentation, they cannot answer them. How do you prevent these situations from reoccuring?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Conference with parents asking them if they assisted with the project.

Comments: A conference is great, but this sounds more like an attack, and the parents will automatically go on the defensive.

Comments: Singling out parents in a meeting will produce negative consequences. In this scenario the parents will feel targeted. Instead, the appropriate action would be sending a respectful reminder letter with each project that the assignment needs to be 100% the student's original work.

Comments: I wouldn't be as straightforward with the parents in the conference but rather lead up to discussing the project with them. That way they wouldn't feel attacked and would be willing to cooperate with you.

Comments: Parents could lie and say they did not help. I think a conference explaining to parents why they should not do their child's work would be better.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this suggestion. Having a meeting with the parents could cause tension and noncompliance with the parents and student in the future. There are different ways I would go about this.

Comments: This isn't going to be a helpful solution. Its pretty obvious when a parent assists, or in this case does the project. A conference may be helpful, but in class projects sound like a better way to avoid this.

Comments: If you already know the answer from how the student presented the project, why ask the parent? It sounds like looking for a gotcha moment. Its more important for the patent to know the student isn't learning if they don't let their child do the work.
