  Case: Kids or Products?
With a vast variety of researched based information to state the contrary , schools have decided to limit the recess for elementary students to 15 minutes in the district. Students and teachers continue to deal with behavior issues in the class which can greatly impact classroom instruction. I believe part of this problem lies in the lack of free time allotted for the students. They are after all children. Recess promotes team work, verbal communication, sportsmanship, exercise, and creative expression through the arts. Unfortunately, the present approach is to run students through the process of learning as if this will produce an atypical product. When children are authentic and need the time to decompress from instruction as well as converse with their peer group with limited adult influence. At least allow the students to have a full thirty minute recess. They are children not bottles of Cola.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I agree that decreasing recess has a negative impact. I would find ways to incorporate movement into my classroom. "Brain Breaks" are a great time to get out of your chair and move around a bit. Cooperative learning strategies also provide opportunities for movement during instruction.

Comments: Brain breaks, stretching, answering questions via specified moments (go to corner A if you think...), and other movement ideas can help. Allowing more "free" time in your classroom if you're able can also help.

Comments: This is a great idea, because your solution works within the stipulations that the state is setting. It is unfair to take free time from students because they do need to take a load off of their brain periodically. By allotting time in the classroom to take a breather is a great idea especially through organized games. Plus, this helps create a maintained stress level in the classroom.

Comments: I agree. Even as I college student, teacher in training, I find I need breaks for myself throughout the day to decompress and digest material. So I can see where this would be twice as important for a young child. Breaks allow the rain to aborb information more effectively. I love your idea of movement in the class as this will also help the students as research shows that exeercerise done on a regular basis can help the brain growth and reduce stress on the student.

Comments: I heard that some teachers use "yoga" as a way to help the students relax and decomposed the day. I agree that "brain breaks" are a good alternative to recess since most playgrounds are out of schools.
