Case: Cluster Math
I am currently teaching a cluster math class, which means that I have very low students and advanced math students all in the same class. I provide instruction the same way for all students, but then about half of my class is ready to move on and the other half needs remediation to be successful. What is the best way to use my time in order to challenge advanced students and remediate struggling students in the same class period?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would teach the lesson at a slightly slower pace, then have some math intervention activity where high and low students are paired together. Have the higher students teach the lower ones, and then split into small groups for further remediation while students who understand do a challenging activity with what they have learned. |

Comments: Though I think this is a good solution I'm not sure it's the best one. I think teaching the lesson at a slower pace will cause the advanced students to loose interest in the class all together. |

Comments: I really liked all of these ideas, I just don't think slowing things down is the way to approach the problem, because it still doesn't solve the issue with the more advanced students. |

Comments: If the class is already being taught at a moderate pace then slowing it down could mean that more than half of the class would be bored and uninterested. The last part of the suggestion is helpful. |

Comments: It is a possible solution, but not the best. Can be very tricky to pair up students. Sometimes the skillful ones are not very cooperative and they get desperate when their peers are not getting it. |
