  Case: Transgender Empathy/Rights
There is a male student at my school who likes to wear nail polish and lipstick. Many of the teachers see this as a class distraction. How can teachers minimize distractions in the class without infringing upon the students' beliefs/feelings/rights?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
i would speak with the student and ask if there is another way that they can express themselves without distracting others. If not, I would work around it. Every student deserves to be themselves.

Comments: It is disrespectful to imply that any LGBTQ student utilizing cosmetics is distracting. We should set the example and not let it bother us, to teach our students acceptance.

Comments: I would not address this like this. It's not fair to the student. This is wrong.

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! I would never ask a student to change their personal appearance as long as it follows the dress code policy.

Comments: This may make the student feel alienated or like their behavior is wrong. Also, if other students see this student being pulled aside it may be a cause for bullying. As long as a student's dress isn't directly offensive to anyone else then it shouldn't be a problem.

Comments: This IS the way the student has chosen to express himself. You should continue to model inclusion and not tolerate bullying. He absolutely should NOT be asked to change what he is doing.

Comments: Asking the student to express themselves differently because others are distracted places the blame on the student and will likely make this student feel shunned and not supported by you. This could do significant harm to the student's self-esteem.

Comments: I don't agree, a student should never be told they can't express themselves and be who they are. That would destroy their self esteem. The student should never be told they are a distraction.
