Case: Seriously
I am a Lesbian and will soon be in the classroom teaching. What I find to be discouraging is that students will be able to tell I am lesbian by just my looks. I am worried that they will not respect my title and me as their instructor. How can I bridge the gap between them disrespecting me/ judging me and them respecting me regardless of how I look?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
If you want to be open with your students and the question comes up I think you should answer openly. As humans we are judgmental creatures there is no two ways about it. But when it comes to them disrespecting you don't let it happen. You are their teacher, you need to take charge of your classroom and deal with misbehavior and disrespect in an appropriate manner. Make it very clear to your students you will not tolerate any sort of disrespect towards you or other students. You can also talk about differences among people in your lessons and how to approach them in real life. |

Comments: Students will better understand such difficult concepts than they would otherwise. it is also important to keep in mind such differences such as beliefs or religions. Some religions are highly against such issues. |

Comments: I really like this soution. Taking charge of your classroom will really set the tone for the rest of the school year. If you let your students know early on that you do not accept disresrect in your classroom the environment will be calm and judgemental free. |

Comments: As teachers it is our job to teach lessons that will follow us once we leave the classroom. This is a perfect example of one of them. |

Comments: No, I do not agree. The teachers sexuality is none of the students business regardless of what upper level classes she is teaching. She needs to teach her class respect - not about her sexuality. |

Comments: I don't think bringing personal beliefs and feelings into the classroom is a good idea, but I do feel it is important for them to see you as not only a person, but their teacher and adult figure, who deserves their respect. Respecting them as individuals and treating them as you would want to be treated should trump any judgement they try to place on you. |

Comments: I don't think it is wise to have open discussions about sexuality with children, especially in the classroom. This would not be appropriate coming from a heterosexual teacher. |
