Case: Teaching Faculty Students
I am currently a elementary school teacher at a small, close-nit school. I have an administrator's child in my class and he is having academic/behavior issues. The administrator frequently tries to confront me about the situation face-to-face. I am concerned because the other parent is not present and proper documentation needs to be made. Advice?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Although this student is a child of an administrator this child needs to be treated just as another other child would in your classroom. The administrator should understand that they need to go through the same channels as other parents to address issues with their children. Before or afters school meet with the administrator to set up a parent teacher conference to discuss the issues that are being seen in the classroom. If you feel uneasy about it maybe have another administrator present with you when you speak to them about setting up a conference. |

Comments: I think this solution was good because I know I would feel uncomfortable about telling my boss about their child's behavioral issues, especially if they are unprofessional. It is a good idea to have a third party present to establish the tone. |

Comments: I like that this solution suggested bringing in another administrator, I feel the third party witness would be helpful. |

Comments: I agree that the child needs to be treated like any other child. They shouldn't have special privileges just because they are related to a faculty member. A parent teacher conference would certainly help the situation. Having another administrator present is important to make sure the meeting doesn't get out of hand. |

Comments: I completely agree. If the parent/administrator objects, they need to be reminded that the same procedures should be followed for every parent, if only to keep things fair. And that you ARE just doing your job. |

Comments: This is a perfect example of a solution. Students shouldn't be given special privileges just because their parent is an administrator, so a meeting needs to be held to handle the behavioral situation. |

Comments: I agree with this solution entirely. The student should be treated like any other student and the parent should understand that no matter their faculty position, they are the parent first and should be treated as such. No exceptions. |
