  Case: Self-abuse
I have an ESE student that hits himself in the head at random. He also bangs his for arms on the bottom of the desk. I am new to this student, and I am trying out some new techniques with him. One of his teachers has told me that he is doing these behaviors for attention. I would like to pursue some other avenues in order to explore his intentions. Do I listen to the veteran teacher, or do I follow my instincts?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This behavior could possibly be related to ASD. I would try and get to know more about the student to decipher whether he is actually doing it for attention or not. I think you should listen to the veteran teacher to an extent, but following your instincts to find out why he is doing it and/or how to help prevent the behavior is a good idea too.

Comments: I think the first thing a teacher should do is look into the history of child's past behavior and see what has worked and what hasn't and decide the best approaches from there. I'm not sure instincts would be the best approach to do first.

Comments: This is the worst solution because it is giving a diagnosis for the student. A teacher should never try to diagnose the student, that is the job of the professionals.

Comments: This is wonderful. Often times, with a behavior like this, there is a reason that most people may not be aware of. investigating such reasons shows tht you care and are oncerned about the student's well-being.

Comments: I think this solution is the most useful because it offers another reason about what could be causing the behavior, advises to use the veteran teacher's knowledge, but also says to follow their own instinct and try their own tactic to controlling the students behavior.

Comments: Getting to know the student is the best thing that you can do. Once you figure out why the student is hitting themself in the head and hitting their elbows, you can come up with solutions and better ways to handle a problem that they might have.
