Case: Self-abuse
I have an ESE student that hits himself in the head at random. He also bangs his for arms on the bottom of the desk. I am new to this student, and I am trying out some new techniques with him. One of his teachers has told me that he is doing these behaviors for attention. I would like to pursue some other avenues in order to explore his intentions. Do I listen to the veteran teacher, or do I follow my instincts?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
While it is good to hear out other teachers for their opinions he is still your responsibility. If he is hurting himself it should either be in his IEP and should give reasons and way to prevent. If it isn't then one you need to stop the action before he does something too damaging, contact both administrators and the parent so everyone is in the loop and find a good way for him to vent this kind of behavior.
I have been in a classroom with a student that has a tendency to self and this particular student has a aide with him at all times to prevent this kind of behavior but this situation is also inside an ESE specific building and he would considered severely or profoundly handicapped. |

Comments: This is a great solution to the problem. By doing all the research you can and making everyone in the loop is a great way to go about this. Also making him comfortable is very helpful and hopefully he will show progress. |

Comments: I agree most students who tend to self harm are in an ESE specific classroom and most of the information is located in their IEP. In this situation it is always good to get administration involved for documentation purposes. |

Comments: IEP is definitely the first place to look. Advice from veterans are good and a great way to brainstorm possible solutions if none have been found yet. I would also add that communication with the parents about his behavior at home and whether or not there is something that they do which helps to calm him down would help. |

Comments: This suggestion helps the teacher to ensure the proper mechanisms are in place so this child is safe and monitored. It includes administration and parents which seems essential in this saturation. In addition, it fortunately doesn't give weight to the prior teachers suggestion that the student is doing this for attention. That suggestion is an opinion and is not protective of the student or responsible. |

Comments: I think that it is important to notify the parents to see if they are noticing the same behaviors at home and what they have found works for preventing the behavior. |

Comments: This is a good solution. You can listen to the veteran teacher a little bit but at the end of the day, he is now your student and you should help him in whatever way possible. Just because that was his past behavior doesn't mean it will always be his behavior. |

Comments: I agree. Yes, sometimes ESE kids have to find a way to release some of their pent up energy that they are unable to regulate on their own and hitting themselves or banging is a way that they do that. It's an input/output thing and not just for attention. |
